Comprehensive Protection for Your Peace of Mind

When you hire a vehicle from Midhire, we want you to drive away with confidence, knowing you are protected. Understanding your insurance cover is a vital part of the rental process. This guide outlines exactly what is covered under our standard policy, your liabilities, and the excess amounts applicable to different vehicles and drivers. We believe in complete transparency so there are no surprises in the unlikely event of an incident.

How Our Cover Works

Every rental agreement includes fully comprehensive insurance for the vehicle, meaning you are legally covered to drive on UK roads. This policy covers third-party liability as well as damage to the rental vehicle itself. However, like most insurance policies, it comes with an 'excess'—a pre-agreed amount that you are liable for in the event of a claim. It is important to note that we do not currently offer a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or excess reduction products, so the standard excess will apply.

How Our Cover Works

Standard Excess Rates

The excess amount is the maximum you would pay towards repairs or a claim if the vehicle is damaged or stolen while in your care. These rates vary depending on the vehicle type and the driver's age:

  • Standard Cars: £500.00
  • Medium Vans: £500.00
  • Large Vans, MPVs & Minibuses: £750.00
  • Young Drivers (Aged 23-25): £650.00 (Restrictions apply to vehicle categories)

If the cost of repairs is less than the excess amount, you will only be charged for the actual cost of the repair. If the cost exceeds the excess, your liability is capped at the excess amount stated above.

Important Exclusions

While our insurance is comprehensive, there are specific instances where the driver is liable for the full cost of repairs, regardless of the excess cap. These exclusions are industry standard and include:

  • Negligence: Damage caused by careless driving, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or putting the wrong fuel in the vehicle.
  • Interior & Glass: Damage to the vehicle’s interior (including upholstery), tyre punctures, wheel damage, and all glass (windscreens and windows) are not covered by the standard insurance policy.
  • Overhead Damage: Damage to the roof or upper sections of commercial vehicles (often caused by low bridges or barriers) is fully chargeable to the hirer.
Important Exclusions

Generally, only corporate customers with a business account can use their own fleet insurance. Private individuals must use the insurance provided by Midhire as part of the rental agreement.

If you are involved in an accident that is proven to be the fault of a third party, and we successfully recover the costs from their insurer, your excess/deposit will be refunded to you.

You do not pay the excess in cash, but you must have a valid credit or debit card available for the security deposit pre-authorisation at the start of the hire. This ensures funds are available should an incident occur.
